SCUBA DIVING FOR PARA ATHLETE AS AN ACTIVE FITNESS REGIME
Deepa Malik, the first female para-athlete from the Republic of India, eyes a come back at 2021 World Para Athletics Championships. This was after winning a silver medal in Paralympics 2016 in shot put.
Unfortunately, shot put and javelin within the 53kg weight class are brought down from the 2020 Paralympics in which she used to compete. Deepa discovered that Only discus throw is there in her class at the Olympics in which she had won a bronze in Asian Games last year. However, she cannot throw discus because it causes jerk and eventually neck pain. Thus following the doctor’s recommendation, she will not be throwing discus for some time, though she will be training for the same. The 49-year old jock cannot sit idle and in a bid to stay fit, is making an attempt at ocean-based adventure sports. She has learned scuba diving early this year, has spent a few months to learn scuba diving and it has helped keep her fitness regime active.
